Hi cat lovers! Today, I’m focusing in on cats like mine – who are considered to be senior cats. In the world of felines, a senior cat is one who is 10 years old or older. Beyond that, a cat is considered to be geriatric when they reach the age of 15 years old.
But, more than just a label based on your beloved pet’s age alone – there are a lot of considerations you need to make as your cat grows older. They – like humans – have special needs as they age. For cats, one of the biggest adjustments you’ll need to make is all around the issue of making things more accessible for your pet.
As cats grow older, they aren’t as energetic as they once were, or as spry. Maybe jumping becomes more difficult. And I think they just appreciate comfort more than ever. (Even though all cats, even kittens love being cozy!)
It’s with all this in mind that I chose this Feandrea cat tree as one of my favourites for senior cats. Sure, it’s not as splashy and impressive looking as some other cat trees that practically reach to the ceiling! And it doesn’t have every feature of some of the fancier cat trees. But I love that it has these features for senior cats:
- Lower height – Cats love feeling high up and able to look all around their kingdom! But older cats simply cannot climb as much anymore. So, this lower height means they can still scale it and have a comfy place all their own.
- Very sturdy design – All cats, but particularly older ones, need to feel super secure on their own cat tree or kitty condo. This one has that. It is built for even larger, older kitties to feel safe. Perfect!
- Built-in scratching post – There is also a sturdy, large scratching post built right in. So, if you don’t want to buy a separate scratching post, there’s no need to.
- 2 distinct sleeping areas – There is both a large perch with secure sides on the top AND an entirely enclosed cat cave. Older cats need lots of quality sleep to stay strong and healthy, so I love that this cat tree has two safe places where they can just hang out or rest. 🙂 Stay strong, older kitties. We love you guys!
P.S. I also like the simplicity of this kitty condo, because it’ll be easy for us cat owners to put together! Some of those super-tall cat trees can be pretty complex to actually construct. If you’ve tried it before, you know of what I speak! hahaha
Other helpful resources:
- This Feandrea cat tree is very similar to the one I featured in this article. The only difference is it has a more traditional cat scratching post rather than a pad. And the cat cave is rounded, not square. The top supportive perch also looks super plush, which might be really nice for older cats to feel even more comfortable.
- And then there is this really uniquely designed cat condo by Heybly brand, which I’ve never featured on this site before. It gets good ratings though, and is a truly enclosed cat cave. Very cool looking, and looks good too for both older AND larger cats.
- If your senior cat is still a complete DIVA (most of them! haha) then this adorable, yet still sturdy PINK cat tree might be the right choice for your family. It also has one additional level, if your cat still wants to enjoy a little bit of climbing. And yes, there are absolutely other colour options for a more neutral palate: grey, beige, and a brown and white duo-colour option.
