How to Warm the Heart of an Aggressive Kitten?

How to warm the heart of an aggressive Kitten? It is an interesting question because for all the cute,
cuddly kittens that people bring home, there is the one kitten who is not. Yes some people end up with
a kitten is bitey, aggressive, moody and doesn’t want to be held. Unfortunately, that is the kitty we got
some years ago off Kijiji.

That should have been the first clue but when we saw him, our hearts melted. It was love at first sight.
It did not matter that the previous owners only had him a week and could not handle him even though
he was seven weeks old. It did not matter, we were taking him. So how did we mellow him out?

Patience and more patience!

We needed to be very patient. We could tell immediately that he was very afraid and because of this
he would bite and stack at us. However, we noticed some things that broke our hearts. First, when we
would pick up a cup, he would immediately get into a fighting position and stack and his at us. We
realized that he must had some bad experiences with cups.

Second, whenever he heard a motorcycle, he would panic and take off. We then realized that our little
guy had a tumultuous life already. This was at least his third home in seven weeks and he was probably
mistreated in some way.

So we patiently, waited on our buddy. We spoke calmly and lovingly to him. And we did not react to
his outbursts and bites. Also, we did not try to pick him or cuddle him. But instead let him come to us.
And over time he did come closer to us and allowed us to pet him.

The Squirt Bottle is Your Friend

There were times when our boy kitty would get I such a state that it was hard to break him out of it.
However, we found that a couple of light squirts of water and a calm reassuring voice saying “no Milo”
would do the trick and break his aggression.

For the first few years of his life, it seemed like that we were always squirting him. But over time it got
less and less and now we don’t really squirt him anymore.

How to Warm the Heart of An Aggressive Kitten – Conclusion

So how long did it take? Probably about four to five years. And he is still not a lap cat or likes to be
cuddled. However, he sleeps right in between us every night which is amazing. He also, wants us to sit
by him when he eats and we even can brush him and cut his nails. Go figure!

So what was the secret? Lots of patience, a good squirt bottle and most of all, a lot of love. If you love
him dearly, eventually he will love you back. Yes, we are his people and he loves us from the heart.
What a beautiful feeling! We are so glad we did not give up on him.
